State of Nature 2023

Welcome to the third part of this mini-series of articles.

Lots of statistics here.

The 2023 State of Nature report shows that the abundance of species studied in the UK has declined by 19 per cent on average since records began in 1970.

Of the groups that are in decline, 43% birds, 31% amphibians and reptiles, 28% lichen and fungi.  Pollinators such as bees and butterflies are among the worst-hit groups, falling by 18 per cent on average.

Of 8,840 species in England that have been assessed using IUCN Regional Red List criteria, 13% have been classified as threatened with extinction from Great Britain.

I recently met some wonderful people at the Sustainability Expo, who had some great ideas and inventions to help tackle the world crisis of pollution, climate change and species loss.

The Waste Shark invention, based on the whale and controlled by drone technology, is designed to collect marine debris and plastic waste from the surface of inland waterways.  Blue Piranha supplier of works uniform holds quality, excellent service, and sustainable values in their brand.  At the Sustechs centre, they help customers seek new and innovative renewable energy and water saving solutions for domestic and commercial clients. Lemon and Jinja are a zero-waste food store – looking at their plastic free products, lots to offer, at a reasonable cost.   The Woodland Trust, Palm Oil Community, Butterfly Conservation and London Zoo had some brilliant stands to promote their awareness.

My favourite was a guy called Neil from Aquapax spring water, who promoted his brand of water, packed in ethnically packaged plant-based fibres.

I have also recently come across a company called Life Supplies and they supply refillable toiletry bottles such as body washes, toothpastes, and Bamboo toilet paper. So, we can continue the war on single use plastic in all tasks in life.

It’s up to us, as individuals, to step up and help our natural world and the planet we live, as our leaders don’t seem to be working hard enough or following their own policies to do the right thing.

Keep up the good work, Everyone!

Love from Stanfree Valley Preservation Group. Xxx
