CURRENT THREATS

During the mid-1990s, the Oxcroft, Romeley and Hoodcroft belt was jeopardized by opencast mining, threatening ancient woodlands, hedgerows and Greenbelt land. The community embarked upon a war with RJB mining, the outcome was a retreat and the Valley was saved.

Currently, we face a tidal wave of problems including The Markham Vale Expansion which is spilling its way out from the old Seymour colliery site towards us, fields of solar farms, sporadic development of houses within the area, the future threat of HS2 tearing through our landscape, the new fear of Fracking (shale gas) and the ongoing legacy of living alongside historical contamination from Coalite Chemicals.
