A few weeks ago, we found a young heron by the roadside in Stanfree. It looked to be wounded and very frail. Tragically, lots of wildlife are injured or killed on these busy rural roads. Luckily, we knew of a place where these beautiful animals could be taken and hopefully rehabilitated to good health. The centre is run purely by volunteers, who dedicate hours to help, provide intensive care for and save injured wild animals. The end result is whenever possible to release wild animals back into their habitat.
In 2022, a hedgehog was taken there from the main road in Stanfree and saw a full recovery. With this in mind, the heron was wrapped up in an old shirt and taken to the centre at old Whittington.

 Â
A member of the Angels quickly set to work on our arrival and checked the heron over for harm. “Safe at Last” He hadn’t any major injuries on further inspection, however, was incredibly undernourished and weak. He ate a huge amount of fresh fish during those first few days at the centre. It was amazing to see the change of his health in such a short space of time. Well done Angels and a donation from Stanfree Valley Preservation Group for your amazing efforts. Â
Here’s Just a little about them –
The roots to the sanctuary were planted just after the second world war by a Sheffield man called Colin Bentley, Thank you Colin and family for a wonderful place!
Promoting animal welfare is at the forefront of the wildlife angles mission. They actively engage with schools, home education groups, and local communities to raise awareness about wildlife and wildlife conservation. They often host open days at the sanctuary. Visit their website and find out about these events.  Â
